Pruneyard Hobee's Closing After New Year

The large restaurant has been here for 15 years.

Here's a letter to its Campbell customers:

Dear Valued Pruneyard Customers:

We are sorry to let you know that we will be closing Hobee’s Pruneyard after the Holiday Season. Our last day of business will be Sunday, January 5, 2014.

While we have remained a popular draw for the past 15 years, our option to renew our lease brought the prospect of a doubled rent. We would not be able to absorb such a substantial hike and maintain our modest, family-friendly prices. The large size of Hobee’s Pruneyard – 6500 square feet – poses a particular challenge since our rent is based on square footage.

Our immediate concern is for the welfare and continued employment of our loyal crew. We will be working closely with each individual crewmember to determine if they are able to transfer to one of Hobee’s six other locations, or if they are interested in employment with one of our industry colleagues at The Pruneyard.

We are extremely proud of what Hobee’s Pruneyard accomplished over the years. The restaurant gained the loyalty of many regular customers and won some terrific honors, including scores of Best Breakfast citations and the 2010 Business of the Year Award from the Campbell Chamber of Commerce. Hobee’s Pruneyard was also a consistent supporter of hundreds of area schools, non-profits and civic groups.

Please be assured that we are actively scouting possible replacement locations in the Campbell area. As noted, we prefer a smaller footprint (about 3500 square feet). Feel free to e-mail us at efike@hobees.com with any real estate suggestions you may have.

Finally, though we also closed our Los Gatos and Stanford locations this year due to similar rent concerns, these closures belie an otherwise successful and exciting year, during which our remaining locations posted sizable sales gains and Vice President Biden made a well-publicized trip to Hobee’s Sunnyvale in June. Moving forward, we’re particularly excited about marking our milestone 40th anniversary in 2014. We hope that you will continue your Hobee’s habit at the following South Bay sites starting January 6: Hobee’s San Jose (680 River Oaks Parkway @ Montague); Hobee’s Cupertino at The Oaks Shopping Center, and Hobee’s Sunnyvale (800 Ahwanee Ave. @ Mathilda and 101).

It was a sincere privilege being a part of the Campbell community these past fifteen years. THANK YOU for being a part of our family!
