Mother Daughter Team Bake Up a Storm for Pooches

Healthy pet bakery opens in Campbell to cater to the four-legged palate.

When San Jose resident Joanne Gutowski-Joplin could not find the right kind of dog treats that would be healthy and soft enough for her dogs Obi-Wan-Kanobi and Hunny in her local pet stores and shops, she decided to throw on her oven-mits and get baking in the kitchen herself.

After coming up with the perfect concoction of organic peanut butter, whole-wheat flour, wheat germ, organic milk and baking powder, her creative effort was a success. Soon she became well known for her delectable homemade dog treats among her friends and their furry companions, so much so that they were willing to pay her for them.

Today Gutowski-Joplin, with the help of her daughter, runs a bakery with the clever name Okashi Barkery where Campbell residents can stop by to purchase a variety of healthy, holistic goodies especially for canines of all sizes.

This pooch bakery is located at 519 E Campbell Ave. in a shopping center between and downtown. It is open six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday.

Gutowski-Joplin says she knew that a pet friendly community such as Campbell would appreciate her small business and in turn would be a great opportunity to connect with other dog lovers.

The birthday biscuits, colorful cupcakes topped with yogurt frosting, liver brownies and glutton free peanut butter treats made of all natural organic ingredients are popular buys among Okashi Barkery’s canine customers. There are even free samples of their confections on the pastry counter ready for doggies to taste.

Customers are greeted with friendly smiles from the owners and on some days a welcoming tail wag from Gutowski-Joplin’s own perky pets.

I am impressed with CalTrans ability to do the cleanup, but the problem of homelessness does not goRead More away. Until we find a way to help these people in need, the camps will just move to another location, and everything will start all over again. The homeless need help - whether they want it or not. It's time to get that ball rolling.

Who is Tony Faber? Here is some history from a family member. My name is Karen Hunt and myRead More grandfather is and was Albert Jacob Faber. He owned and ran that bike shop up until his death in 1975. Subsequent to grandpa's death the house/building became the property of my grandmother, Lucille Faber. Upon her death, the property went to my mother, Jackie Faber-Cornick. In 1978, the business, not the building was sold to Alex Lariviere and he has conducted business since. The building was never sold and belongs to my mom, Jackie Cornick. It was her great-grandparents home back in the 1920's. We are shocked and saddened by this tremendous loss. At this time, we are trying to decide the fate of that beloved building. We are currently awaiting forensics tests, engineering and structural reports, and working with the City to keep it safe and prevent it from being vandalized and becoming a blight. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about the history of Faber's Cyclery. My grandfather was a man of character and integrity. Sadly, neither of his two sons became involved in the business. With that said, anybody claiming to be a Faber or son of Albert Jacob, is just misrepresenting the truth. Thank you for sharing your story and memories! Very truly yours, Karen Hunt Great grandaughter of the owner of the Original Fabers Cyclery.
