Mathnasium Aims at Making Math Fun

The Campbell tutoring center was recently recognized by a local television station.

Teaching surrounded Kobad Bugwadia throughout his life.

His mother, Gool Bugwadia was a teacher in Bombay, India. She ran her own nursery school there while Bugwadia's father, Aspi worked as an engineer.

"Now I do both," Bugwadia says with a smile.

Bugwadia followed his mother's example early on and began tutoring other students at his high school and when he came to the states, he student taught at Rutgers University.

"Math is fascinating," he says. "It's not as difficult or complicated as we think."

Bugwadia went to Rutgers University where he received his PhD in electrical and computer engineering. He worked in the engineering industry for 12 years before starting his business in Campbell and holds two U.S. patents and one European patent in engineering.

now serves more than 115 students that come from all over the area, including Campbell, Los Gatos, Saratoga, San Jose, Sunnyvale, Los Altos and even Santa Cruz. The students come to Mathnasium twice a week, for an hour at a time.

Bugwadia chose his current location at the Campbell Plaza Shopping Center because it put him between the two main communities his tutoring center serves: Campbell and Los Gatos. The ample parking lot (a comfortable 600 spots) and the visibility cemented his decision to open his doors in 2009.

Mathnasium Campbell-Los Gatos is part of a larger franchise, which began seven years ago.

What sets it apart from other similar tutoring centers is two things: its focus on math and its customizable teaching techniques, Bugwadia says.

Mathnasium Campbell-Los Gatos was once again nominated for a Best of the Bay award. Check out the coverage from Jan. 29 here.
