VIDEO: Local residents sound off on high gas prices
In Campbell, gas prices on Friday ranged from $4.29 for a gallon of unleaded gas at the Arco station on Winchester Boulevard at West Campbell Avenue, to $4.79 for the same grade of fuel at the Shell station at East Hamilton and Salmar avenues.
"These gas prices are crazy!," said Chris Cecconi, 40, of Campbell as he filled his Toyota pickup truck Friday afternoon at the Rotten Robbie gas station on Hamilton Ave.
Cecconi is a handyman who spends a lot of time on the road visiting clients from throughout the South Bay and beyond, and he is sensitive to spikes in gas prices.
"I've been driving back and fourth from Gilroy and it takes away $100 a week," Cecconi said, adding that it's hard to pass along the costs of higher gas to his customers as he needs the work. "We just can't say no," he said.
Motorists in nearby cities including Los Gatos, Mountain View, and Cupertino are seeing similar price hikes.
Across California, residents awoke to find that gas prices had increased significantly overnight even by as much as 20 cents in Ventura. The price in Mountain View is higher than the Bay Area average of $4.52, according to AAA.
The sharp rise has been attributed to a decreased supply coming out of California's refineries, including the Chevron refinery in Richmond.
