Are Those Crickets on Your Donut?

Psycho Donuts celebrates National Donut Day with some delectable creepy-crawly creations.

loves to celebrate obscure holidays and has a way all its own to do it, from its to the donut each is a memorable event for all who partake.

So National Doughnut Day, a holiday created by the Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War 1 was a no-brainer for the local donut shop, but how they chose to celebrate is what makes them live up to their name.

Similar to the observance of National Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day (another holiday the donut shop acknowledges) National Doughnut Day is a holiday many are unaware of.

"It occurred to me that no one has claimed National Donut Day as their own," Psycho Donuts Owner Jordan Zweigoron said in an email. "Psycho Donuts aspires to OWN National Donut Day each year. For this reason, we do crazy things (to justify our psycho existence) around National Donut Day."

In the past, the local donut shop has celebrated the holiday with the creation of new donuts, like the CottonBallz: donut holes rolled in cotton candy. They even had a cotton candy machine to make them on demand, Zweigoron said.

In 2011, Psycho Donuts had its first with J. Lohr Winery. And this year, the shop offers up something a little more exotic: PsychoBugz, bug-topped donuts.

The "Chrip Derp" and "Worm Hole," both true to their names will be available at both Psycho Campbell and Psycho San Jose May 30 through June 2.

The idea for the creepy-crawly donuts came from the donut shop's head chef.

"Our head chef noticed that one of our vendors sold a variety of different kinds of edible bugs," Zweigoron said. "He said, 'Hey, we should do bug donuts.' I kind of laughed and didn't take him seriously - well, not at first."

Zweigoron says that some of the ideas at the donut shop start out like that. Then, one of Psycho Donuts' best-selling artist, Christine Benjamin mentioned she was working on paintings based on bugs.

"We laughed about the idea of creating a bug-themed art show," he said. "And then it all came together."

Zweigoron jokes that the shop gets its bugs for its newest creations late at night.

"We go in the woods with nets and listen for chirping," he jokes.

In truth, there are vendors that sell edible bugs, Zweigoron said.

"There are over 100 kinds of edible bugs, and each bug variety comes in several choices of seasonings - ranging from chipotle to garlic, to bacon cheddar," he said.

The shop announced the new pairing on its facebook page and the reactions thus far have been all over the place.

"Humans come in many personality types," Zweigoron said. "Some are wildly excited and willing to drive hours to try one. Others are downright horrified. Even my own sister pleaded with me not to launch bug donuts! If we were called anything other than Psycho Donuts, maybe I'd of hesitated. But alas, we ARE Psycho Donuts!"

Along with the new donuts, the annual   where four contestants compete to finish a large donut will take place June 2, 2:00 p.m. and will include the buggy creations.
