Viewfinder: Campbell's To-Be Supersized Supermarket

The previously vacant Mervyns department store building on West Hamilton Avenue will soon emerge as a new Safeway supermarket roughly the size of a football field.

Safeway, the popular supermarket chain, is developing a 55,000-square-feet grocery store and an accompanying fueling station on West Hamilton Avenue in Campbell.

The store is scheduled to open this Friday, April 8.

Hey Tammy,
Thanks for commenting! Did you shop at the Mervyn's when it was still there? What are you most looking forward to with this new shopping area?

Don't get me wrong, I'm very excited about a brand new Safeway, but I am bummed that it is further from my neighborhood. I used to shop at the store on Winchester and Payne. I will have travel farther once that store closes & the new one opens. Milk will no longer be just down the street :(

I was blown away by this store when I drove by yesterday—it's enormous! I can't even recognize the old Mervyns beneath the shiny new exterior. I'm looking forward to being blown away by the inside of the store when I get the chance.

Yes, I did shop at Mervyn's while it was here so do that miss that a bit. I look forward though to the convenience of the new Safeway, their organic section and all the extras inside. Am looking forward to the Home Consignment Center being even closer to me then it was before since I do like to stop in there from time to time. Look forward to seeing who comes in next to the shopping area.

Hey Tammy,
Thanks for sharing with us! I haven't actually been inside but from what my reporter tells me, it's phenom. And like another reader pointed out on our facebook page (www.facebook.com/CampbellPatch): Proximity is key. Hope you enjoy the new business. Let us know how the first outting goes!

I should've added that I did go to the grand opening yesterday and yes, it IS phenom! Enjoyed all the free samples, the small band playing inside, the ribbon cutting and running into neighbors and friends. It's quite crowded right now, however, so I shall do my first official shopping trip later this week!

Yes, Tammy, the store was totally packed today. I wish I could have made it to the ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday but this morning was quite the spectacle. It's very exciting for the surrounding neighborhood.
