Grab and Go Kids Planner: A "Dig," a Dog and Math, Yes Math!

A friends of the library book sale, an archeological "dig" at History San Jose, a math competition for elementary school kids, a chance to adopt a pet and an insect extravaganza are our suggestions for this week's Kids Planner.

Where/When: , 77 Harrison Ave., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go:  Find some good books or DVDs at a good price and support the library, too.

Where/When: , 2511 Winchester Blvd., Saturday

Why Go: This is for kids in third, fourth, fifth and six grades to compete in three math events: The Counting Game, Magic Squares Challenge and Mental Math Workout. Any student can partipcate and there will be medals, prizes and goodie bags for all.

Pricing: Free to register. Online registration has ended; contact the Mathnasium center to inquire about registering in-person.

Where/When: History San Jose, Senter Rd & Phelan Ave, San Jose, Sunday, 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Why Go: Give your child a chance to be an archeologist for a day.  They will be able to join members of the Stanford University Archaeology Department for a "dig."  Who knows what might be unearthed?

Pricing: $10

Where/When:  , 14855 Oka Road, Los Gatos, Sunday, 12:00p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Why Go: Your second chance to adopt a rescued dog or puppy this weekend. Or if you're still not ready to commit to adoption, you can consider fostering a dog through the Companion Animal Rescue Effort (CARE) of San Jose.

When/Where: Sanborn Park,  16055 Sanborn Rd, Saratoga, Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why Go: This is the day for everything you (and your child) wanted to know about insects but were afraid (or didn't want) to ask.  As the event organizers say, walking sticks, silkworms and hissing cockroaches will be there, so why not you? At this family-oriented hands-on affair, children and adults get an up-close look at live insects, spiders, scorpions, millipedes and more. There will be children's crafts, face painting, and bug-themed snacks.
