Canadian circus troupe Cirque du Soleil's blue and yellow "Big Top" was being raised Thursday in preparation for the touring group's upcoming performances in San Jose.

The raising of the tent, scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m., marked the start of an eight-day period in which crews will also set up concession and artistic tents, the box office, administrative offices and a kitchen, Cirque du Soleil spokesman Kevin Kopjak said.

The Big Top and the Cirque du Soleil Village will be located in a large lot at North San Pedro and West Taylor streets just east of state Highway 87.

The main tent, which stands 19 meters high, will have seating for more than 2,600 people, he said.

This year's show, "Amaluna," opens in San Jose Wednesday, Jan. 22, and runs through March 2.
