Choosing Your Next Book to Read

How do you go about choosing which book you're going to read next? Here are a few tips to make the decision easier for you.

We have a lot of choices when it comes to reading, and sometimes it’s tough to decide what to read next. And with our busy schedules, we want to make every minute we set aside for reading count.

Whether it’s for your book club, that next volume to have ready on your night stand, helping teens choose a book or picking one out for the toddler, here are a few ways to help you make that decision.

A good source is always your friends and colleagues. Most books are chosen through those recommendations. Also, check with the or for their staff recommendations as well as the library’s link to the New York Times Bestsellers List.

Hardcover Fiction

The Paris Wife by Paula McLain. From NPR: [This novel] tells the story of Hadley Richardson, Ernest Hemingway's first wife and companion during his Paris years. Hemingway and Richardson were blissfully in love until he left her for her best friend.

She Walks in Beauty, edited by Caroline Kennedy, who has selected poems that tell of women’s first love, marriage, motherhood and work. Each section includes introductions written by Kennedy.

Hardcover Non-fiction

A Singular Woman: The Untold Story of Barack Obama’s Mother by Janny Scott delves into the life of the woman who shaped our current president.

Betty White: If You Ask Me. A funny and touching memoir by the popular actress and comedienne.

Children’s (teens/adults)

The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins continue to lead the bestseller lists for teen readers. Many adults are enjoying these books as well.

Children’s Picture Book

Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes by Mem Fox and Helen Oxenbury. You and your child will never tire of reading this sweet book, and the illustrations are adorable.
