Through a Dog's Eyes

Learning how dogs experience the world.

I recently finished reading, Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Know, to get a better understanding of how my dog experiences the world. Author Alexandra Horowitz is a psychologist who studied animal cognition as well as her own dog, Pumpernickel.

Horowitz says that dogs have a keen sense of smell and this overriding sense allows them to “see” the world through their nose. She encourages pet parents to take their dogs out on a “smell walk.” Instead of walking at a brisk, calorie-burning pace with your dog, Horowitz suggests letting the dog go at his own pace and stopping to smell the roses or whatever objects attract his attention.

Another behavior Horowitz addresses is licking. When my husband comes home from work, our dog, Sasha, runs up and greets him by licking him all over. My husband, like most pet parents, views this as a sign of affection. It might help that my husband is a chef and must come home smelling awfully good to our dog. However, Horowitz says that dogs do this behavior just as their wolf ancestors did—as an attempt to get the parent to regurgitate food.

Horowitz says that dogs seek novelty but in a safe, well-known place. She recommends giving our dogs new toys and new treats as a way to stimulate their brains. And when you leave for an extended time, hide treats throughout the house as a way to minimize boredom.

Meet Jasper, a 7-month old social, affectionate, and playful Labrador mix. He might also have a little shepherd in him.

Jasper is a fun-loving, lap-loving, easy-going pup. He can keep himself amused with a toy or bone, but he'd love to be your daily jogging or hiking buddy so he can stretch those lanky athletic legs of his. Dog parks are a favorite of his since he can really get going and run flat out. He's also learned his basic commands quickly and does well in his crate.

For more information about Jasper and other dogs available for adoption, visit the Copper’s Dream Rescue website.
