Pet Obesity Epidemic

Is your tabby too tubby?

Fat Cats and Big Dogs

New research from the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention shows that half of all dogs and cats in the U.S. are overweight. At our dog’s annual check-up, our veterinarian was unable to feel Sasha’s ribs and suggested that she shed a few pounds. This won’t be welcome news to our dog whose favorite spot is in front of the cabinet where her food and treats are stored. But it’s for her health.

Obesity in pets can lead to serious health issues, such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure and cancer, and research shows pets who eat less during their lifetime live significantly longer.

If you’re an expectant mom or dad who’s also a pet parent, don’t miss the “Preparing Dog for Baby” seminar on Thursday, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Humane Society Silicon Valley.

This two-hour seminar addresses common concerns of expectant families, signs of potential problems between dog and baby, and training methods you can use to prepare your dog for the next steps. Taught by Stacy Braslau-Schneck of Stacy's Wag'N'Train, the cost is $30 per person or $45 per couple.

Pet of the Week

Sal is a sweet kitty who is in need of better luck. He was found as a skinny stray wandering around downtown San Jose, but with a little food and TLC, he’s doing better. He does need twice-daily insulin injections and a special diet to treat his diabetes.

His hobbies include fetch and playing with catnip toys. And after his activity, he will settle down into your lap for some purr time. For more information about Sal and other cats available for adoption, visit 13thstcats.org.

This fetching photo of Sal was taken by Photos by NikRaye Photography, a local pet photographer who helps out rescue groups by snapping photos of homeless dogs and cats.
