Furtado's career with the US Military spans 40 years, beginning with his enrollment into the ROTC in college, while he studied to be a pharmacist.

He was then commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1965 when he graduated from San Jose State University. From there, he did his active duty as a pharmacist for two year, went into the reserves and finally, retired in 2004.

"I think, people know that a number of veterans are being discharged from the service and going back to school," Furtado says. "It's a very different experience for them and if they can have a place to gather and talk and find a level of support amongst them, that helps.

"This also is a respectful acknowledgement by the college of the veterans contributions to society and to the campus," he says.

The new center aims at assisting veterans with educational and financial assistance, medical referral, computer assistance and more.

"There's a great need for this right now; a place where veterans can meet together and discuss common issues, especially for our returning men and women," says Campbell Veteran Memorial Foundation Chairman of the Board Jim Free. "It's very necessary to help these men and women assimilate back to civilian life.

"I’m hoping this may serve as an example for all university campuses around the Bay Area and throughout the country because this is something that is very much needed and well deserved by those returning home," Free says.
