Meteor Booms, Then Flashes Through the Sky

A meteor flew through the sky at about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday night.

Did you see the light tonight? Or did you feel the loud boom just before it shot across the sky?

A large meteor was seen by many, including Campbell Patch Editor tonight at around 7:45 p.m.

The meteor was confirmed as NOT being part of the annual Orionids meteor shower, but as they say, you ain't seen nothing yet.

The remainder of the shower should be at its peak the night of Saturday, Oct. 20, until just before dawn on Oct. 21. This year, the moon will be setting at approximately midnight, which will keep the sky darkened enough that—barring cloud cover—you should be able to see up to 15 meteors per hour.

Some tips for meteor watching in general are on the EarthSky website. For this meteor shower, it's recommended you view it from open area away from city lights.

ABC 7 had this gallery of images shot just outside of Santa Rosa. The Mercury News pieced this Storify article together on what the Tweetosphere was saying about the nighttime image. The Sacramento Bee is calling it a "Fireball."
