Looking for Love

Consider adopting a "less adoptable" pet.

There are some dogs and cats who just have a harder time getting adopted into a loving home. Some may have health issues and require more care, some are older and some take a while to show their winning personalities. To help these pets out, Petfinder is designating Sept. 17-25, 2011 as “Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week.”

Animals who need a little more love are just as likely to return that love tenfold! The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recommends adopting an older dog or cat because you know the animal’s personality and full size from the start—no surprises! Older dogs are most often potty trained and don’t require as much supervision as a puppy or younger dog. Also, if you’re less active, a senior dog might be more your speed. And cats have a long lifespan with many felines reaching their 20th birthdays.

Here are some dogs and cats who would love to find their forever home:

Cinder

Cinder is a black German Shepherd Dog who is 6 years old. Cinder has Pannus, an eye condition common to this breed, and needs eye drops administered daily and limited exposure to direct sunlight. He’s very playful and sweet but can be a little unsure of himself in new situations because of his eye condition. Cinder is good with other dogs and had been crate trained. For more information about Cinder, visit the Nike Animal Rescue Foundation (NARF) website.

Fozzy

Meet Fozzy, an 8-year-old Pomeranian mix. He may be a little older, but Fozzy’s tail never stops wagging. He’s a sweet and affectionate dog who gets along well with people, dogs and cats. Fozzy would love to find a lap to make his new home. For more information about Fozzy, visit the Support Team Animal Rescue (STAR) website.

Rudy

Here’s Rudy, a 2-year-old dachshund mix who’s a little on the shy side but will warm up after he gets to know you a little more. Rudy loves going on long walks and visiting the park. He would do best in a house with older children and he gets along well with other dogs and cats. Rudy is housebroken and crate trained. For more information about Rudy, visit the Companion Animal Rescue Effort (CARE) website.

Joe

Meet Joe, a handsome 6-year-old black cat looking for a loving home where he can sleep at the foot of the bed. Joe is FIV-positive which means he has feline immunodeficiency virus. He needs a home where he can have a playmate who is also FIV-positive, or to be the only cat in the household. He gets along well with other cats and loves people. For more information about Joe, email Town Cats of Santa Clara.

Ray

Ray is a 5-year-old Siamese cat who could use a break. He was found on the streets with infections in both eyes but has responded well to treatment. He requires eye drops daily for the rest of his life but his sight has not been affected. Ray is a typical Siamese, loving and independent, and would do best as an only cat. For more information about Ray, visit the 13th Street Cats website.
