Howl-o-ween

Celebrating the season with your pet.

As Halloween approaches, many pet parents are getting their furry ones ready to celebrate the holiday. According to the National Retail Federation, 15 percent of Americans will dress up their pets for Halloween and spend $310 million on costumes.

Whether you buy or make your pet a costume, there are a number of ways you can celebrate and show off your fur baby.

You can get a Halloween pet portrait taken by Think Massmedia this Saturday, Oct. 22 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Pet People in Los Gatos, or on Friday Oct. 28 between 6 and 8 p.m. during at the Civic Center Plaza in Milpitas. The sitting fee is no charge.

Once you snap a photo of Fido or Fluffy, enter it in PetSmart’s contest and your pet could appear on a national PetSmart television commercial. Visit the PetSmart website and upload a photo of your pet in costume by Monday, Oct. 24. Finalists compete for votes on PetSmart’s Facebook page, and the winner will be announced Nov. 11.

And don’t miss Society Dog’s Howling Halloween extravaganza in Los Gatos this Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011. The cost is $15 if you register in advance and $20 on the day of the event. Dress your dog up and join the fun as you trick or treat in downtown Los Gatos. Afterwards, there’s a costume contest and raffle. There’s always a high turnout for this event, and a bevy of creative canine costumes. For more details or to register, visit the Society Dog website.

I am impressed with CalTrans ability to do the cleanup, but the problem of homelessness does not goRead More away. Until we find a way to help these people in need, the camps will just move to another location, and everything will start all over again. The homeless need help - whether they want it or not. It's time to get that ball rolling.

Who is Tony Faber? Here is some history from a family member. My name is Karen Hunt and myRead More grandfather is and was Albert Jacob Faber. He owned and ran that bike shop up until his death in 1975. Subsequent to grandpa's death the house/building became the property of my grandmother, Lucille Faber. Upon her death, the property went to my mother, Jackie Faber-Cornick. In 1978, the business, not the building was sold to Alex Lariviere and he has conducted business since. The building was never sold and belongs to my mom, Jackie Cornick. It was her great-grandparents home back in the 1920's. We are shocked and saddened by this tremendous loss. At this time, we are trying to decide the fate of that beloved building. We are currently awaiting forensics tests, engineering and structural reports, and working with the City to keep it safe and prevent it from being vandalized and becoming a blight. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about the history of Faber's Cyclery. My grandfather was a man of character and integrity. Sadly, neither of his two sons became involved in the business. With that said, anybody claiming to be a Faber or son of Albert Jacob, is just misrepresenting the truth. Thank you for sharing your story and memories! Very truly yours, Karen Hunt Great grandaughter of the owner of the Original Fabers Cyclery.
