Happy Mother's Day!

Part 6 of our month-long Mother's Day series.

Us Mom Squad Moms think motherhood is the best, most rewarding job in the world and we are so proud to be Moms. We love watching our children grow and delight in their accomplishments.

We are there to scoop them up and shower them with kisses when they get hurt, but we also know when to just let them do things on their own. It’s our job to teach them not only how to eat, talk, and walk, but also to be kind and well mannered, to share and to have empathy for others. Moms teach children how to be little people from “scratch.”

Being a Mom means something a little different to each of us, so we asked Moms at all different stages of motherhood: What does being a Mom mean to you?

Each week leading up to Mother's Day, we’ve shared their responses with you. This week, it’s our turn!

Nicole:

Every day I am amazed at how different my role as a mother is. I wake up in the morning to my daughter belting out the Star Spangled Banner and my son giggling at who knows what and I feel lucky that these are the noises that wake me up in the morning. The sounds of well-rested, raring-to-go children and their little voices are the reason I get out of bed.

Don’t get me wrong, there are days where at the end of the day a few glasses of wine are the only thing to settle me down from the craziness I endured that day. But even on those days I’m thankful for being a Mom and I’m thankful for my gorgeous children who I love more than life itself.

So what does a being a Mom mean? Well, it means everything. It means you are everything to the children you brought into this world. You are their life, love, and trust. And they are everything to you. When they are hungry, you feed them. When they are sick, you nurse them back to health. You teach, watch, nurture, and love so fiercely that only another mother can even remotely understand. The endless depths of your heart are discovered when you become a mother because there is no love like the love for a child.

Being a mother is one of the most intense things a person can experience. And every mother experiences it differently and with every child. When I had Evie, I had mild postpartum depression and I was afraid I had made the biggest mistake in my life, I couldn’t eat, and I cried all the time. And when I had Milo, I was totally fine, joking around with the nurses and having a grand old time snacking on the sandwich my parents had brought me. And yet, here I am today, with two children who are the light of my life. They make me laugh ALL the time (and have made me cry on a few occasions as well). But I love them both so deeply and equally that it astounds me at how different it started out.

Motherhood is a true roller coaster, and I have never been more excited to ride a ride in my life!

When I became a Mom I thought I knew what to expect. Of course I would love my children, but what I didn’t expect was the depth of this love. From the first bewildering moments after they were born I have loved them so deeply that I would do absolutely anything for them.

Having children has taught me so much about myself too. I didn’t know how strong I was until I was entrusted with these little lives. As Mothers we put our children’s comfort, happiness, and well being above all else, we strive daily to find the balance of keeping them happy without “spoiling” them, we find teachable moments in everyday activities, and though we try our very best we sometimes fail. Being a Mom is such an overwhelming responsibility and gift, that only other Mothers can truly understand.

As a Mother, I get to experience the most amazing thing: childhood. It’s a time when anything is possible, everything is more fun, and the silliest little things are so funny that you can’t help but let out a big belly laugh. Watching my children’s childhood unfold is amazing. They are so in awe of the world around them, taking it all in and learning from everything. It is such a beautiful thing to be a part of.

When I look at my children I have such a deep sense of love and I want to give them the world. I want to show them all the beautiful things this life has to offer them. I want them to have a happy childhood filled with love and good memories. I want to shield them from the inevitable pain they will one day feel. I want to teach them all the lessons I myself had to learn “the hard way” so they don’t have to. I want to help them grow and succeed in adulthood. But most of all I want to show them that no matter what, their Mom will always be here to listen to them and love them.

We all view our roles as mothers a little differently, but there is no denying how much we love our kids and our role as their Mom! We wish you all a very happy Mother’s Day!
