Campbell's Stojanovich Family Park Receives Statewide Recognition

At its grand opening in December 2011, nearly four years after being conceived, Stojanovich Family Park left Campbell residents smiling.

Campbell's newest park is causing smiles once again with two recognitions it has received--one at the local level and the other at the state level--since its opening.

Stojanovich Family Park received the 2012 Award for Excellence in Park Planning from the California Parks and Recreation Society.

"It was nice to get the local one but then to also get one statewide one ... we are pretty honored," says Campbell Public Works Engineer Michelle Quinny.

Campbell's 1.3 acre park was also recognized by the in February 2011 for the Award for Excellence in Park Planning at the CPRS District 4 level.

"Every year CPRS hold an annual awards program and agencies throughout the state submit their projects," Quinny says. "The CPRS gets together and decided which projects further their goals."

At an April Campbell City Council meeting, CPRS Vice President Tim Barry presented the city with the award.

"We represent 3,200 park professionals," Barry said. "We are looking for leaders. Looking for leardership in the state and you have them here in Campbell. The staff and consultants did a tremendous job."

Anna Stojanovich sold the parcel to the city in 2007 for $1.36 million, less than half of its estimated market value, on the condition that it be built into a park.

The Stojanovichs had owned the lot since 1934, when they grew fruit in surrounding orchards.
