When disaster strikes, whether it’s an earthquake, flood or fire, it’s important to be prepared and to have an emergency plan that includes our pets. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has many valuable tips on preparing for emergencies.

When stocking your emergency kit, don’t forget these items for your fur babies:

- a pet first-aid kit
- three to seven days’ worth of food
- disposable litter trays
- feeding dishes
- a two-week supply of required medications
- bottled water
- a blanket for scooping up a fearful pet.

Do some planning ahead of time in case you have to evacuate. Most American Red Cross shelters do not accept pets, because of health and safety regulations, so it’s important to have alternate places lined up. The ASPCA recommends identifying hotels or motels outside of your immediate area that accept pets or asking friends and relatives if they would be willing to take in your pet.

Pet first aid will be taught on Saturday from 1-5 p.m. at the Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) in Milpitas. Learn CPR and basic life support for your pets, such as how to control bleeding and apply bandages, and how to recognize and stabilize ailments such as shock and poisoning. On April 5 from 6:30-9 p.m. at Canine 1st Aid in San Jose, a class teaches how to respond to heatstroke, cardiac arrest, poisoning, choking and other life-threatening conditions. To register, visit the Canine 1st Aid website.
