Shedding a Different Light On the Situation

A first-hand review of Jerusalem Grill & Bar from a mommy's perspective.

During a conversation with a friend earlier this week, she gave me a great parenting tip: ask your children what they did that was kind at the end of each day.

As I pondered introducing this question into our regular dinner conversations, I decided that while kind should most definitely make the cut, I wanted to add healthy and smart as well.

So, as my 4-year-old son and I enjoy our meal each night I ask and he answers. Wednesday's conversation went like this:

Me: What did you do that was kind today?
Adam: I helped the teacher's find out why Sarah was hitting Zach.

Me: What did you do that was healthy?
Adam: I went to gym class and ate my apples.

Me: What did you do that was smart?
Adam: I used my workbook.

I went to bed feeling proud that I was making him think about these ever-important topics and how he was effecting and being affected by the world.

My smugness came a little too prematurely. Yesterday as we ate dinner at the newest Campbell restaurant, Jerusalem Grill & Bar, I sat frustrated. We'd come to test out the newest Kosher spot in Silicon Valley and since walking in the door all I could focus on was the lack of accommodations for a family dining with an infant. As I often do, we'd brought our 8-month-old son with us and due to the laws of kosher we were not allowed to feed him his bottle at the table (in Judaism meat and milk are not permitted to be at the same table.)

So, in a huff, I walked outside and stood holding my baby and trying to fee him his bottle. One of the restaurant's staff came outside to bring me a chair and see if I needed anything. Instead of being thankful for their hospitality and warmth, I continued to be disturbed at this venue that most obviously did not welcome families.

Then, when we went back inside and sat down for our meal, there were carrots waiting for the baby and a very attentive server. Adam looked up at me and said, "Mommy, what did you do that was kind today?"

I hesitated, realized how unkind I had been in my initial observation of this small, family-owned business, and said "I gave someone another chance."

Just like that, I tried to review this new restaurant with the eyes of an adult, one who is out for a nice meal in a beautiful restaurant and wants to enjoy herself.

While every new place has its issues and needs words of encouragement and time for improvement, the Jerusalem Grill & Bar has an exceptionally clean and trendy look, while still appearing to be warm and friendly. They are true to the Jerusalem cuisine, include a menu with enough options to please a 4-year-old and a 40-year-old pallet and the portions are large enough that we all had leftovers.

My review? Try the place out. Support local business, enjoy middle eastern cuisine and make sure to feed your baby a bottle before heading out.
