Posters depicting the Campbell Library show colorful insight into what the library offers.
All eyes, and markers, were on the Campbell Library this year. "Discover Campbell Library" was the theme of the Campbell Civic Improvement Commission's 9th Annual Poster Contest, open to fifth graders throughout Campbell. Last year's theme was "Be Fit and Healthy in Campbell" and included posters depicting food pyramids, the Campbell Community center and its track. This year, posters showcased books, computer screens, CD players and comics. There were about 70 entries. Lynhaven Elementary School fifth grader Mary Jo Mendoza took home the grand prize, a mountain bike donated by Wheel Away Cycle Center of Campbell for her poster. "Truly, it encompassed everything," said Sherrie Doherty, recording secretary for the civic improvement …

Residents question the rapid growth of the city.
The Campbell City Council unanimously approved a high-density, mixed-use development last night, but the bigger discussion that came out of the meeting was on the city’s future growth. "I understand that people are concerned that there will be too many people in Campbell," said Campbell Mayor Mike Kotowski. "The point is, the city will change. There has to be a certain amount of trust that we (the city council) are going to do the right thing for the right reasons." Bay West Development received approval for its planned development at 1677 S. Bascom Ave., a mixed-use project that includes 168 apartment units and 15,295 square feet of ground floor commercial. The approval also allowed the developer to remove 66 protected trees. Initially …

Bill by State Sen. Joe Simitian would boost fines for using cell phones while driving.
The California State Senate Monday passed a bill authored by Sen. Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) that would increase the fines on motorists who talk or text while driving. The bill, SB 1310, passed on a 24-9 vote, and increases the fines for breaking the hands-free and no texting laws from $20 to $30 for a first-time offense, and from $50 to $60 for subsequent offenses. The extra money from the tougher law would be used to fund a distracted driving education program in the California Office of Traffic Safety, according to a statement released by Simitian’s press office Monday. The total cost of a first offense, including penalties, would rise to roughly $199, depending on the county. Second offenses would cost about $371. Also, a second …

Need to travel north or south on Highway 85 from Los Altos, Mountain View, Sunnyvale or Cupertino? Be ready to detour at certain spot beginning as early as 7 p.m. and through the night.
For people who love to hate the bumpy commute on Highway 85, things are about to get a little better, Caltrans says. But first they have to close off ramps and roadways overnight, in a project that will extend from April to July. Most lane and ramp closures will begin at 8 p.m. and end before 5 a.m. on weekdays. On weekends, most closures will end by 10 a.m., according to a news release issued earlier this month by Caltrans spokesman Bernard Walik. For the weekend of May 12-13, however, the closures are actually an hour earlier and an hour later, according to Caltrans' daily lane closure report made available to the media. Lane and Ramp closures, Saturday through Sunday, May 12-13 Highway 85 Southbound: Highway 85 Northbound The work …

Eshoo’s legislation boosting safety of children’s medication clears key committee.
Two reauthorization bills written by Rep. Anna Eshoo that would make medication safer for kids cleared a key committee vote Thursday. The Best Pharmaceutical for Children Act (BPCA) and the Pediatric Research Equity Act (PREA) were approved unanimously by the House Energy and Commerce Committee and are now on their way to the House floor for consideration. The two bills were first passed by Congress in 1997 and 2003, respectively. “I’m thrilled by the Committee’s vote today,” Rep. Eshoo said in a press statement. “Doctors should not have to play a guessing game when it comes to prescribing medication to children. That’s why I’ve been working for more than a decade to make progress in pediatric drug labeling. Kids deserve access to the same…

Barack Obama is the first sitting American president to publicly and officially support gay marriage.
After years of pressure from the American public, civil rights groups and the media, President Barack Obama gave a definitive answer on his stance on gay marriage Wednesday morning in an interview with ABC's Robin Roberts. In the video, which you can watch to the right, Obama says the following: "I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because …

A closer look at what exactly is being looked at in the draft of the single-use plastic bag Environmental Impact Report.
Rincon Consultants gave an overview of the areas that have been deemed as having a "potentially significant" impact and those with "less significant" in regards to a single-use plastic bag ordinance at the May 2 meeting in Campbell. According to Rincon Consultants Environmental Planner Matthew Maddox the purpose of last night's meeting in relation to the California Environmental Quality Act is: Below are the "significant" and "less significant" areas being researched as part of this EIR, according to Maddox. Impacts Less than Significant on: Potentially Significant Impacts on: The last scoping meeting is taking place tonight, May 3 in Redwood City.
The only community meeting scheduled for Campbell in the plastic bag EIR drafting process took place May 2 in the Campbell Library.
It’s been the topic of many contentious discussions. The question of whether or not to ban single-use plastic bags came to a head with the enacting of bag bans in the nearby cities of Sunnyvale and San Jose. “We are changing behavior and that’s very difficult to do,” said Dean Peterson, County of San Mateo director of environmental health services division at the Campbell meeting. “Convenience is king.” Peterson, along with Matthew Maddox, a Rincon Consultants environmental planner came out on May 2 to the Campbell Library to hold one of seven scoping meetings where residents could ask questions and weigh in on the Environmental Impact Report and what should be included. “This is the best turnout we’ve had in the scoping process,” Peterson…
