Here's what I wonder: exactly what war are you talking about? As a working mom, I'm not sure I'veRead More ever heard anyone directly say anything to me that suggests disapproval of my choice. (Or if I did, it registered as nothing more than any of the other random dumb things people say.) I've seen articles like your in magazines or blogs, or as topics for discussion or debate. I've had these discussions with my friends. But unless there's been some knife fight in the Target parking lot that I'm unaware of, this "war" is comprised of nothing more that the desire of bloggers such as yourselves to have a headline, and then write an essay about your personal feelings. All well and good, but please consider your own circular reasoning. Basically all explorations of this topic conclude that we are all different and free to make our own choices (and lucky to have this freedom!), so why open with the false premise of battle lines drawn in imaginary sand?

Great advice ladies! This is a difficult thing to teach our children. I'm glad you have continuedRead More the conversation on the subject of safety after what occurred at the park a few weeks back. Excellent points too. I love the idea of not only looking for a police officer, but another mommy with little ones. That's something even little kids can understand and follow through with. Keep up the good work. Can't want to read more from you both!

From Mom Squad Friend Lesley L: Well this subject is very prominent in my mind right now, as a 5Read More year old disappeared from a small town i lived by that i would never consider a dangerous place for a child, and that coupled with Bethanys experience really rocked me to the core. Our daughter like Nicole's is incredibly friendly and partly due to living in a large apartment complex where she speaks to everyone in the elevator always says hi to everyone. I have started explaining to her that she should only say hi to people that she knows or that mommy/daddy has said she can speak to, but to be honest this doesnt always work. Also our social group also means she is constantly surrounded by many adults whom know who she is but she doesnt necessarily know. THis makes it hard as they play with her (whilst we are there) and all treat her wonderfully but it doesnt help our stranger danger talks much. We have had alot of discussions regarding getting into cars and the fact that she can only get into a car with mommy or daddy and noone else and she understands this. We also make a very big deal about the fact that she always has to be able to visably see mommy or daddy at all times. I am trying to find a balance between watching her every move and allowing her some freedom when we are out but this is incredibly difficult to balance. I guess this just proves i have a long way to go in this area and so look forward to more comments of advice.

Our son had his crib as well as a day bed (for mom and dad and those tough nights) in his room soRead More the idea of a bigger bed wasn't a completely foreign concept for him since the two sizes were in his room. When we did decide to make the move (around 2ish) there were only a handful of times where he rolled off the bed. We did the "crash pad" as well, made up of extra blankets and pillows but again, the fall wasn't too far since the bed was pretty low to the ground. Our son had the same issues staying in the room at night with his new-found freedom (which we used baby gates to control) and actually going to bed (he would stay up and play with all his toys that were now at reach). Luckily, he's a creature of habit and it hasn't been an issue since. Good luck and thanks for the great insight!

Here's a comment from our FB pageRead More (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Campbell-Patch-Mom-Squad/264361260272684?ref=tn_tnmn) Lesley says, "Great article again ladies! We actually switched Cathrin because she was trying to climb into her bed after we brought her a princess blanket last xmas, so she was just over two. We switched her then and was amazed how easy it was, and how it didn't really affect her sleep at all either."

Mayra Flores de Marcotte April 3, 2012 at 07:43 pm
Wow! Thanks for commenting and sharing your insight on this topic, Just Dandy. As a parent, thereRead More are times where I have to step in and be the parent for all involved, including other people's children but I always wait to see if the kids can resolve the issue on their own before walking over. But if something looks dangerous or a child's safety is in question, I walk over and "momma bear" comes out. :)
Bethany Curran April 4, 2012 at 03:22 pm
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! We agree, it is best to be clear with kids. They really need thatRead More from the adults in their lives.
Bethany Curran April 4, 2012 at 03:29 pm
Good points Mayra. As long as nobody is in danger or getting hurt, we like to wait to see if kidsRead More can resolve things on their own too. It's an important life lesson for them to learn to work things out on their own. Of course, if the situation is dangerous, someone is about to get hurt, or there is bullying going on, it is time to step in.
