Pounders Prevail in Battle of the Bands Competition

Campbell/San Jose band Pounders won the final Battle of the Bands competition at 9Lives in Gilroy because of their multi-genre music and eccentric performance.

Twenty-four bands made their way from the southern and northern tips of California to compete in Battle of the Bands at Gilroy’s 9Lives, but local Pounders ultimately prevailed during the final round of competition on Saturday. “There were a lot of great bands in this competition and to know that the judges ranked us number one was humbling,” Pounders' bassist Alonso Hernandez said. “The camaraderie was something that fueled us during our set. I can honestly say that our set felt like the best 45 minutes we've played as a band in our six years.” Pounders, stemming out of Campbell and San Jose, is comprised of lead vocalist and guitarist Chris Pounders, bassist and backup vocalist Alonso Hernandez and drummer Justin Imamura. The band’s …

Pounders Push for a Renaissance in Local Music Scene

Pounders is one of three local bands competing this weekend in the Battle of the Bands in Gilroy.

This is one local band that doesn’t want to waste their time. Just recently they were featured in Rolling Stone Magazine and singer/songwriter/guitarist Chris Pounders was featured in a David Lynch video. This Saturday, the three guys from San Jose and Campbell compete as one of three top bands in Gilroy's Battle of the Bands at the former Gasligher Theater of Gilroy, now named 9Lives Club. From the beginning, things have always been all or nothing for the three guys that make up Pounders, a local part punk, part pop, all rock band. “It’s kind of another disco era right now,” Singer/songwriter/guitarist Chris Pounders says. “We hope that punk rock makes a comeback but it’s gonna take more than just power chords. It’s something we’re …

Castlemont Joins Montalvo's Arts Splash!

The Campbell elementary school's 'Tapestry of Color, Shapes, Thoughts, and Quotes' becomes part of Montalvo's third annual art festival.

Third and fourth graders busily put together small squares of art in room 33. Multi-colored paper clips littered desks, acting as hooks between the small, sometimes abstract piece of art created by about 350 Castlemont Elementary School students. These third through fifth grade students were preparing for their very first time being part of Montalvo's annual Arts Splash!, an open house/open studios and student art festival, now in its third year. The artwork, color swatches from the Home Depot or paint stores with designs made by paint chips and a written poem, quote, hope or dream on the back, will be installed at the event on April 21. Named the "Tapestry of Color, Shapes, Thoughts, and Quotes," the colorful pieces were strung up by …

SV Reads Explores 'Paranoid Politics'

Islamophobia, McCarthyism and the Yellow Peril are discussed Tuesday evening during a Silicon Valley Reads panel at the Jewish Community Center of Los Gatos.

From the Jews of the McCarthy era to the post-9/11 Muslims, American politics always points its finger toward a scapegoat due to fear and lack of knowledge, said a panel of three speakers at the Jewish Community Center of Silicon Valley in Los Gatos on Tuesday. “When ignorance and misinformation [are] exploited, [they] can lead to bigotry and hate,” said Wajahat Ali, a Muslim-American playwright from Fremont. “You can inoculate yourself with proper information.” Brought together through the 2012 Silicon Valley Reads program, Ali was joined by San Jose State University political scientist Larry Gerston and Congressman Mike Honda for a “Paranoid Politics” panel. Silicon Valley Reads is in the final month of the three-month-long series of …

My paintings depict my different characters and their feelings about love - in my painting "Blue For You" the character is sad about a love lost and her skin has turned blue.  Lacey Bryant "Valentine's day is hated on a lot, especially by those who have been spurned by …
