Police: Bicyclist Left Brain Dead near Campbell Avenue

Campbell resident Alejandro Ramos has been declared brain dead after likely being struck by a vehicle while biking on Friday night.

Alejandro Ramos of Campbell was left brain dead after being struck on his bike around 10:07 p.m. Friday near W. Campbell Avenue and Paseo de Saratoga, according to a San Jose Police Department press release.

Officers responded to a report of a bicyclist down in the street. Upon arrival, the officers found the bicyclist who was immediately transported to a local hospital, according to the press release.

Ramos, 50, remains under treatment in the hospital and has been declared brain dead.

Based on investigations, detectives believe that Ramos likely collided with a vehicle, stated the press release. However, the minimal damage to the bicycle leads detectives to believe that the driver of the vehicle may have not been aware that the bicyclist was struck.

According to the press release, the vehicle that struck the bicyclist was likely a small or midsize white SUV.

It is unknown whether the driver of the SUV intentionally left the scene or if they were unaware of the collision, stated the press release.

This is San Jose's 16th traffic-related fatality in 2012.
