Campbell Bicyclist Injured by Teenage Driver

The 17-year-old Watsonville boy didn't have a driver's license when he collided with a cyclist north of town Sunday.

A 17-year-old Watsonville boy who didn't have a drivers license hit a cyclist in rural Watsonville on Sunday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The cyclist, a 54-year-old Campbell woman, was hurt in the crash, the CHP reported.

The collision occurred around 11:30 a.m. when the teen, whose name was not released, was driving west on Manfre Road approaching Larkin Valley Road. The cyclist, Isabella Barrios, was riding her bike north on Larkin Valley, according to the CHP.

The teenager stopped at the stop sign at Manfre and Larkin Valley. Barrios, who didn't have a stop sign for her direction of travel, continued into the intersection. That's when the teenager made a left turn onto Larkin Valley and hit Barrios with the left quarter panel of the his 1992 Honda Accord. She fell to the ground, suffering. The male driver made a left turn onto Larkin Valley Rd. and failed to observe the bicyclist in the intersection. The bicyclist struck the left quarter panel of the Honda and fell to the ground, the CHP reported.

Barrios was flown to a trauma center to be treated for her injuries. The crash investigation closed one lane of Larkin Valley Road for about 30 minutes. The teenager was ticketed for driving without a license and the right-of-way violation that caused the collision, according to the CHP.

The area where the crash happened is just north of Watsonville, near the airport. The narrow, two-lane roads that run through small farms and family homes are windy and hilly.
