Local cyclists are looking at more road opening up in the near future within the city of Campbell.

The fourth public meeting this month for the Valley Transportation Authority's Valley Transportation Plan 2040 will be in Campbell Wednesday night, and the public will have a chance to view all the proposals made by the 15 participating cities within Santa Clara County, including the Orchard City.

According to VTA, the plan provides a framework for developing and delivering future transportation projects within the county.

Campbell submitted 11 projects to the Valley Transportation Plan 2040 project, 10 of which are existing projects within the VTP 2035 project and one new one added on April 1: additional bicycle lanes.

The new proposal is the Hacienda Avenue Bike Lane project, which would add a bicycle lane along Hacienda, between Winchester Boulevard and San Tomas Aquino Road. The cost estimated for this project is about $50,000 to design and build, says Matthew Jue, Campbell public works traffic engineer.

"Hypothetically, if awarded funds for this project, it would take about a year to complete," Jue says.

Of the 11 projects submitted by the city, five are for bicycle use and four are related to intelligent transportation systems. Two projects deal with improving and/or expanding existing trails and possibly building a new one, Jue says.

"We compile the list and go out to the general public and share this and get some feedback," VTA spokeswoman Jennie Loft explains. "The meeting in Campbell, that’s just another way for the general public to review the list of proposals."

Location-specific improvements for all modes of travel are covered in six program areas:

• Highways
• Local streets and roads
• Expressways
• Transit
• Transportation systems and management/intelligent transportation systems
• Bicycles

Previous meetings were held in Morgan Hill, Mountain View and San Jose.

VTA, as the congestion management agency for Santa Clara County, will submit proposals on behalf of its member agencies to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission at the end of this month.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Campbell Library's Community Room, Lower Level.
