BASEBALL: Leigh Rallies Past Branham in First Round of CCS
Pitchers dual goes to Longhorns in Division II playoff opener.
The Leigh High baseball team outlasted nearby foe Branham High 3-1 in a Central Coast Section Division II first round playoff game Thursday afternoon at Leigh High.
Two runs in the sixth inning gave the host Longhorns the lead for good during a tightly contested pitchers dual between Leigh senior Mark Stamps and Branham starter Robby Anderson.
Leigh (20-7-1) will play No. 2 seed Willow Glen High on Saturday at historic Washington Park in Santa Clara.
A lead-off double by senior Matt Urakami helped the Bruins strike first in the opening round playoff tilt. Anderson knocked in Urakami to put Branham ahead 1-0 after one.
Leigh evened the game up at one in the third inning off a fielder's choice. Senior Ricky Hastie scored on the grounder for the Longhorns.
During a game where hits were tough to come by, the two-run rally in the sixth proved to be the difference for the green-clad hosts.
Hastie led off the frame with a single and then stole second base to get things rolling. Stamps helped his own cause with an RBI single, then later scored off a sacrifice fly from teammate Danny Rose.
